What was your most memorable weather event?
There are several that come to mind, but probably the most memorable was the tornado outbreak of May 4, 2003. Just in southern Missouri there were at least 15 tornadoes, four of which produced F3 damage. One of them had a track of over 80 miles. The death toll in our area was 25. Our team was on the air for a solid 8 hours or so.
What is your favourite and least favourite type of weather?
I love active weather in general, but severe weather (tornadoes, hail, etc) is probably the most fascinating and exciting. Of course, it is generally some of the most dangerous weather, too. My least favorite is the middle to late summer, when the central US is typically dominated by a large upper ridge, bringing a long period of hot and dry weather. Boring!
If you weren’t a meteorologist what would you most like to be?
If I weren’t a meteorologist, I would probably be a teacher.
From a purely meteorological point of view, where would you most like to live?
I really like where I live now—in Springfield, MO. We get all types of weather and definitely experience all four seasons in most years. Tornadoes, large hail, flooding, ice storms, and occasionally snow storms all happen here. We can hit 100°+ and we can go below zero.
